It’s been awhile since we’ve done a #FavoritesFriday, featuring some of our therapists’ favorite activities & toys!

Today, our buddy is completing an obstacle course by marching through tires, climbing over a crash pad, & going into the ball pit in order to get a puzzle piece at the top of the club house! We love incorporating movement into activities to increase attention and facilitate gross motor skills.

Want to get your kiddo moving at home with an obstacle course?

Our Occupational Therapists address self-care skills, visual perceptual and visual motor skills, fine and gross motor skills, sensory processing, executive functioning, and social/play skills, which all play a big role in the classroom.

📖 Our Speech Therapists utilize meaning-based strategies to improve reading comprehension, fluency, and accuracy. In this photo, our buddy is using context clues to identify vocabulary words to maintain the meaning of what she’s reading. Using different modalities of drawing pictures and writing also enhance her understanding of new vocabulary.

✏️ Our Occupational Therapists can address the handwriting and idea formation pieces of written language. OT addresses ideation, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, letter formation, line usage, and spacing to assist your child with writing tasks.

Feeding requires many systems in the body to work

Feeding requires many systems in the body to work together, including motor and sensory systems. While eating requires many different motor movements of the lips, tongue, and jaw, it also requires processing and tolerating different food groups and food textures through taste, touch, sight, and smell.

Our Speech and Occupational Therapists are trained in addressing both sensory and motor aspects of feeding, and we make feeding therapy fun! Listed below are red flags to look out for with your toddlers. If you think your child can benefit from a free screening or feeding evaluation, call our office today.

Red flags for feeding difficulties in toddlers:
〰️Lips open/mouth breathing
〰️Tongue visible at rest
〰️Persistent sucking habits
〰️Difficulty gaining or maintaining weight
〰️Snoring
〰️Persistent drooling when not teething
〰️Sleep difficulties including short duration or restless sleep

Red flags for infant feeding difficulties:

We are busy with #FathersDay crafts this morning! Our next #FavoritesFriday activity is finger paint and paint sticks...we love Kwik Stix!

Crafts are easy to do at home and facilitate skills of following directions, sequencing, fine motor skills and handwriting, visual perception, and written language. Finger paint allows for new tactile and sensory experiences, and paint sticks facilitate hand placement for emerging writing skills.

We are so excited to re-introduce and welcome back our newest Occupational Therapist, Ms. Caroline Gonzales!!

Caroline obtained a Bachelors degree in Allied Health Sciences from Nicholls State University and received her Masters degree of Occupational Therapy from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. She completed one of her clinical offsite placements with Mrs. Lacey this year at the CPT. She has experience treating children with a variety of diagnoses while focusing on sensory processing, feeding, handwriting and fine motor skills to assist her kiddos in reaching their goals and participating in the everyday desired activities.
