#BetterSpeechAndHearingMonth continues! Today, our #BetterSpeechAndHearingMonth continues! Today, our Speech Therapists share some “Core Vocabulary Words” to help your early language learner.
.
.
🔹 “My child is learning to talk...where do I start?”
If your child is learning to babble, make sounds, copy your voice and tone, and say words—start modeling these! These functional words help your child get his or her wants and needs met.
.
🔹 “Why don’t I start teaching my child numbers, letters, or colors first?”
While those are important skills to teach and model for your child during play to assist with pre-academic skills, beginning to expose your child to a “core vocabulary” helps your child learn how to request, protest, label, and ask simple questions. We want them to be able to have some power and make meaningful communicative requests.
.
🔹 “How do I model these words for my child?”
Start with your everyday routines and be repetitive with these words! For example: During meal times and snack times, give your child a few pieces of food, and then model “more” before placing more pieces on their tray. At play time, model “ready, set, go!” when racing cars or before crashing a block tower. When your child reaches to be held, produce “up!”
.
.

May is Better Speech and Hearing Month! 👄👂🏽This month, we will share information from our Speech Language Pathologists (also known as SLPs or Speech Therapists).
.
What does a Speech Therapist do?
SLPs are trained to evaluate, diagnose, and treat children who have speech, language, cognitive, social and feeding/swallowing disorders. We work one-on-one with children and their families to facilitate communication at school, at home, and in every facet of life in a sensory-based environment. SLPs can help your child have a voice!

🔹April is Occupational Therapy Month!🔹

Let’s start off #OTmonth with one of the most common questions we get asked:
“What does an Occupational Therapist do, anyway?”

Pediatric occupational therapists evaluate and treat children who are having difficulty participating in meaningful activities (or “occupations”) relevant to their daily lives. This includes playing, learning, paying attention, succeeding in school, participating in sports, self-care (getting dressed, feeding), and being a friend.
.
.
Stay tuned: We will be sharing more about Occupational Therapy and all the skills that are within the scope of practice of an OT. Have a quick question? Check out our website https://cptkids.com/occupational-therapy/.
